Axel Bauer’s debut single “Cargo de Nuit” was released in 1983, featuring a video directed by the controversial filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Mondino in homage to Fassbinder’s last movie Querelle of Brest (starring Brad Davis). Bauer was the first French signing by EMI in London, where his first album “Les Nouveaux Seigneurs” was a modest success, but a lack of radio airplay hampered its performance. I guess this wasn’t the kind of sound that Radio 1 were playing at the time :-)
